BBL worked with a district planning team to design the expansion and remodel of the Gresham High School. The team explored options based on needs identified. The goal was to improve the character of the learning facility and add needed space to alleviate crowded conditions. Gresham High School was plagued by an inefficient layout, insufficient space, and a dingy appearance.
The first step undertaken was the development of a modernization Master Plan. The Master Plan identified phasing to ensure that the existing building could be safely used during any construction period. Efficient circulation paths and layout were a primary goal. The main corridor created a student “Main Street” inviting student social interaction. The new layout brings students in closer proximity to classrooms.

About
1994-2003 / 10 projects
The addition and remodel to Gordon Russell Middle School dramatically improved security and safety by developing an inviting new building entry and office space allowing staff to view the parking lot and main entry for better supervision. The existing office was tucked well into the building and had very little vision of the front entry doors. The office area was moved to the new main entry for security. The addition of six new classrooms is to replace old and deteriorated modular classrooms and to provide for a better student to teacher ratio.
The two existing gymnasiums have new wood flooring installed over the old synthetic floor system. Two separate covered play sheds were constructed adjacent to the existing structure. The vocational shop classroom was remodeled into Professional Technical Labs with adjacent space for vocational shop tools. Several existing interior and exterior doors were replaced and the existing hardware was upgraded. A new controls system was added to the existing building mechanical system. Echoing building materials were used on the existing school, so that the addition looks as if it were part of the original structure.
